11m investment to revive Holyhead
McDonald's
The planned McDonald's will be its first on Anglesey

Holyhead could revive its ailing economic fortunes with the creation of 200 jobs as part of an 11m investment planned over the next year.

American fast food giants McDonald's have announced their intention to build a 1m restaurant by next summer which would create 60 jobs in the town.

It follows news of plans for an 8m retail park development project at the Penrhos Link, which it is hoped will lead to 100 new jobs, and Danish supermarket group Netto's application for a new store in the town creating 25 posts.

The news was welcomed by the town's mayor Eric Gareth Jones.

He said: "It is excellent news and the McDonald's will bring something different for the young people of Holyhead and the visitors who come here.

"Holyhead's economy has been struggling for quite a while.

"We would prefer something more like factories in Holyhead and Anglesey but part-time jobs are better than nothing.

"Young people are leaving the town in their droves, there's nothing for them but at least we can keep them here.

"With the retail park, I believe big shops like B & Q are coming here which is what the population want.

"There is a down side for the other retail trade in the town but we are keeping in line with the rest of the country."

'Good location'

Paul Nicholas, McDonald's corporate affairs manager for north Wales, said it was the first time the chain would open an outlet on Anglesey.

"Holyhead is a pretty big town and our nearest restaurant is in Bangor.

"Holyhead is a good site and a good location which is busy, especially in the summer."

The planned restaurant site is near the Tesco supermarket between the A55 and Kingsland Road.

Holyhead has the highest unemployment levels on Anglesey and accounts for more than half of the people without jobs on the island.

Planning applications for all three developments are to be considered by Anglesey County Council's planning department.
