Mountain park turns to verse
Snowdonia
The mountains have already provided much artistic inspiration

Poetry will soon be adorning gates, stiles and picnic benches across one of Wales' favourite tourist attractions - Snowdonia.

The idea is to coax walkers and ramblers into the area and also promote the region's own rich literary heritage.

The beautiful landscape of north Wales has inspired some of the country's finest poets, one of its biggest actors, and even one of the most famous rock bands of all time.

Poets who have written about the mountains includes one of Wales' literary giants, Sir TH Parry-Williams.

He twice won the chair and crown in the same year at the National Eisteddfod, in 1912 and 1915 and is often described as the first Welsh-language modernist.

Another prominent poetic figure is Ellis Humphrey Evans, a sheep farmer from Trawsfynydd who was awarded the eisteddfod chair posthumously.

He was killed while serving as a soldier on the Western Front during World War 1 - a story which in turn inspired the Oscar-nominated Welsh- language film Hedd Wyn.

Oscar-winning screen legend Sir Anthony Hopkins has also long admired the mountain landscape and kicked started a multi-million pound appeal to buy more than 4,000 acres of the southern flank of Snowdon in 1998 with a 1m donation.

The scenery has even inspired one of country's biggest rock bands.

A stay at a Snowdonia cottage paved the way for Led Zeppelin to write the song Bron y Aur Stomp which features on their Led Zeppelin III album.

Now the national park is inviting people to send in suggestions of suitable and relevant quotations to put on their property.

John Ablitt, the park's head of recreation and communications, said: "We want to make people aware of the culture of the area when they are enjoying the countryside.

"And the fact that poets and writers have written about it and celebrated it is one way of helping people, both locals and visitors, understand that this is a different area with a very distinct culture all of its own.

"The view from the top of Snowdon actually inspires a lot poetry and to be able to see what other people have written and how they have been inspired by landscape is something that can only be of benefit.

Poetic suggestions from the public will be collected by the park authority over the winter.
