Dan's Den project will be the council's 'flagship' skatepark |
A skatepark is to open in Conwy in memory of a teenager who was tragically killed in a shed fire. Daniel Cleverley, 15, died when he became trapped with 13-year-old Kirsty Burvill in a fire in a council-owned storage shed in Colwyn Bay in October 2001.
The new skatepark which is opening at Eirias Park in August is to be named Dan's Den skatepark in his memory.
It is named after the trust set up by Daniel's mother, Hazel Cleverley.
The official opening on Tuesday 12 August will be followed by a skating competition for 11-year-olds and under, 15-year-olds and under and youngsters over the age of 15.

Mrs Cleverley founded the Dan's Den trust as a way of coping with her bereavement.
The charity also plans to build a clubhouse at Eirias Park for the youngsters who come there to skate.
"I felt compelled to do something to keep Daniel's memory alive," said Mrs Cleverley.
"Rather than planting a tree or something, I wanted to do something that is useful and relevant."
The centre will give young people a place to meet, hang out and play music, said Mrs Cleverley.
It will have a coffee bar, homework clubs, discos and information on health issues.
Daniel's friends have been asked about their ideas for the project and will be involved with the design of the building.
"They were obviously affected quite a lot by what happened and I wanted them to be involved," said Mrs Cleverley.
'Flagship'
The trust, which has been given charity status, intends to apply for grants to raise the 400,000 thought to be needed.
"The Dan's Den skatepark is very much the flagship site of the eight we have opened in the county," said Jim Jones of Conwy's Leisure Services.
"We have now negotiated a lease for the clubhouse with the Daniel Cleverley Trust on a piece of land overlooking the skatepark.
"The next step will be to enable them to access funding for the project."
The skatepark development has been funded by a Sportlot grant, Conwy council, the Bay of Colwyn Town Council and the Welsh Assembly Government.
