Views sought on port strategy
Market Street
The strategy aims to boost the town's shopping area
The people of Holyhead are being given a chance to have their say about plans to regenerate the town as a period of consultation starts.

The aims of the Holyhead Forward strategy is to revive the economy of the town, create new jobs and tackle social deprivation.

The details go on show to the public in the town this week.

Displays will focus on regeneration projects such as the new footbridge link, Communities First work and new opportunities for attracting business and industry.

Anglesey Council's proposals to revive the town includes a 1.8m restructuring of the road network which will be carried out over two years to try to attract more ferry passengers into the town to shop.

Under the scheme, a new coach and car park will be built on Victoria Road, enabling ferry passengers to have easy access to the town centre and its shops.

The idea of the footbridge link between the town and the port's car park area is to encourage people to walk to the shops.

Other steps to encourage spending in the town include the return of a traditional street market and making the town an euro zone.

The Holy Island Partnership set up the scheme to accept the European currency to make the most of the 2.4m passengers that pass through the port each year.

Feedback

The partners of Holyhead Forward include the Holy Island Partnership, the local authority, Holyhead Town Council, Welsh Development Agency, Communities First and Holyhead Opportunities Trust.

Councillor John Chorlton, Chairman of the Holy Island Partnership, said the project was an important step forward for the town.

"The exhibition will allow us to inform and consult with local people and businesses about the Holyhead Forward strategy," said Councillor Gareth Winston Roberts, the Economic Development and Planning portfolio holder.

"We will, of course, also be looking their support and all-important feedback."

The Holyhead Forward Exhibition will be unveiled at the former Chocolate Box shop on Market Street at 1000 BST on Friday.
