Student flats plan for club site

Wrexham's Racecourse ground
Developers want to build student accommodation near the Racecourse

Plans to build accommodation for 840 students on land at Wrexham Football Club have been submitted to the local authority.

Wrexham Village Ltd wants to build the flats at two sites near the Racecourse.

The sale and development of the sites is considered vital to leave the club free of debt after coming out of administration last year.

A spokesman for Wrexham council said the application was for outline planning consent.

He added that the proposals were unlikely to be discussed before the new year.

The application proposes to demolish a car showroom, owned by the former major club shareholder Neville Dickens, and build 319 units on the site.

A second application would see rooms for 521 students constructed on a car park.
