Last year Deeside celebrated the production of three million engines |
The car maker Toyota is reviewing production at its Flintshire engine factory, but has said no jobs will be affected. The Japanese-owned firm has announced a reduction of output at a Derbyshire plant, blaming the economic downturn. The company is investing 88m on the Deeside Industrial Estate - where it employs nearly 700 people - to produce a new 1.3 litre petrol engine. A spokesman said the review was a "normal business operation". Workers on Deeside make petrol engines for the company's Auris and Avensis models which are produced at Burnaston, Derbyshire. Production at Burnaston will be cut by about 15,000 cars over the next five months as night shifts are suspended in response to "market conditions." While some of the 220 temporary workers in Derbyshire are expected to be laid off, Toyota has said there will be no redundancies among the 3,800 permanent staff. A company spokesman said: "We are currently reviewing the impact on our Deeside engine plant of reduced volumes of production at Burnaston."
