BBC continues Wrexham broadcasts

Wrexham had been in the Football League for 87 years

Wrexham fans have been told the BBC will still offer BBC radio commentary on games, despite the club's relegation from the Football League.

The team have dropped out of the league after 87 years and from August will play in the Blue Square Premier League.

Local AM Lesley Griffiths wrote to BBC Wales seeking assurances that the club's games would still be covered.

Nigel Walker, head of BBC Wales Sport, said Radio Wales would still commentate although it would be subject to review.

Mr Walker said in a letter to her: "As things stand, Radio Wales will continue to provide commentary of Wrexham's matches each week.

"Like the majority of our editorial policy, it will be subject to review depending on the team's progress."

Ms Griffiths had been approached by members of Wrexham Supporters' Trust who were worried the broadcasts may have stopped.

She commented: "This is superb news for Wrexham fans. BBC Wales are to be congratulated for continuing to provide radio commentaries during Wrexham's first season in Blue Square Premier League."

She said disappointment at Wrexham's loss of league status was felt beyond north Wales.

But she added: "However, there is already a sense of optimism growing amongst fans about the coming season.

"I am confident that under [manager] Brian Little's stewardship, Wrexham's stay in the conference will be shortlived and we will bounce straight back to league status.

"I am delighted that BBC Wales will there to witness it."
