Fans celebrate as Wrexham hang on longer in the league

They thought it was all over - but it's not quite the end for Wrexham FC yet.

The club threw themselves a last-gasp lifeline in their struggle to stay in the Football League with a 1-0 win over Notts County at the Racecourse.

Many of the 3,000-plus fans had expected to see them drop out of the league for the first time in 87 years.

But a second-half goal saw unexpected celebrations - and some even wonder if they could perform the great escape for the second season in a row.

Relieved fans streamed out of the ground, still not sure whether north Wales would retain a league club next season.

Gareth Jones, from Connah's Quay, Flintshire, said: "It's not over yet.

Even if they don't go down, do we still want to be in this position next year?

"I don't want to admit it [relegation] yet. They showed a bit of heart and determination which hasn't been there for the last few games.

"We will have to wait and see."

For others, though, the writing is still on the wall for their beleaguered team, who remain bottom of the table, six points from possible safety, but with a poor goal difference and only three games left to play.

David Lemmon, who travelled from Derby to watch the game, said: "My heart doesn't want them to, but my head says they will go down.

"But even if they don't go down, do we still want to be in this position next year?

"Often, teams who go down have to regroup and reform and if they can get back up, they come back a stronger team."

Wrexham now play Hereford United away on Tuesday, where defeat would make relegation virtually inevitable.

Neil Whitehand, from Nantwich, Cheshire, said: "I'm very happy with the result.

"There's a lifeline there, just about. It's a very slim one but we're still in there."

His son Tom Whitehand said: "The young players really performed today and put in bags of effort.

"Hereford won't be as poor a side, but if they can put the same effort in and fight for the cause, there's a chance."
