Fishing sign in Polish, not Welsh

The sign reminds anglers they need permission and a licence to fish
Environment Agency Wales has apologised for putting up signs for anglers in English and Polish - but not in Welsh.

Notices went up at Erddig Country Park, in Wrexham to remind anglers that they needed a licence to fish on the river.

One was in Polish to cater for the area's growing Polish community. Agency officials apologised for the lack of a bilingual English-Welsh sign.

Local resident Jane Redfern Jones said: "They should have put the Welsh one up first. This is Wales."

The signs informed anglers fishing at the River Clywedog that they need a rod licence and the permission of the fishery owner.

A spokesman said: "Not putting up the Welsh version was a mistake for which we apologise.

"We have made arrangements to correct this and provide fully bilingual signs.

'Big upset'

"We at Environment Agency Wales are committed to treating Welsh and English on the basis of equality.

"We also work to promote angling to all sections of society. We are aware that there is a substantial Polish community in the Wrexham area.

"We have provided the information in Polish so that any members of this community who want to fish are also aware of the rules."

Mrs Redfern Jones, who runs a website promoting Wrexham, said the issue was the agency's consideration of Welsh in its homeland.

"On its website, it has several pages saying how it wants to work in dual languages.

"Circumstances like this would cause quite a big upset.

"Wrexham is trying to promote itself as a tourist spot and to promote the Welsh language. This goes against what they are trying to do."
