Local campaigners oppose the landfill site |
An MP wants clarification on waste dumping between England and Wales over plans to let a Merseyside waste company dump rubbish at a quarry near Wrexham. Clwyd South MP Martyn Jones has asked to meet UK Environment Secretary David Milliband next month.
Mersey Waste Holdings would dump millions of tonnes of waste at Hafod Quarry in Johnstown.
Many local people are opposed, and want the Environment Agency to defer a licence allowing the firm to proceed.
Protesters say a number of outstanding conditions imposed when planning permission was granted remain unresolved.
Constituents "suffer"
Mr Jones said: "I want him to clarify the position on the disposal of waste between England and Wales.
"We are supposed to be cutting fossil fuels, yet there will be a huge influx of traffic. I want to know why my constituents are going to have to suffer for this."
A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: "The agency is still awaiting a technical report from Merseyside Waste Holdings Limited.
"We issued an enforcement notice on the company in relation to Hafod Quarry in February of this year.
"The information we are asking for is technical data as part of the conditions of this notice.
"If we are satisfied that the information received meets our requirements then we will lift the enforcement notice, and operations can proceed."
Earlier, Rob Allan, managing director of Mersey Waste Holdings, said: "We are satisfied that we are in a position to comply with the various conditions laid down in the planning consent, but obviously we will not go ahead until we have the all-clear from the (Environment) Agency."
