Detail sought over education post
Sioned Bowen
Questions are still being asked about Sioned Bowen's retirement
The six Labour MPs and AMs who represent Denbighshire have "demanded" answers over the retirement of the county's director of education.

Sioned Bowen, who had not been in work since the start of last October, announced her retirement at the end of November.

The full reasons for her departure have never been made public.

Denbighshire council said it would make its response public when it had replied to the MPs and AMs.

In the letter to Denbighshire chief executive Ian Miller, the MPs and AMs "demand that the full details of the reasons, decisions and costs" surrounding the departure of Ms Bowen are released.

MPs Gareth Thomas, Martyn Jones and Chris Ruane, and AMs Ann Jones, Alun Pugh and Karen Sinclair also asked that specific issues relating to the amount of money spent by the county on education be published.

A council spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that we have received a joint letter from AMs and MPs regarding the departure of Sioned Bowen.

"We will be responding in due course to the letter and will be happy to share our response.

Although she had not been suspended prior to her retirement, the council had declined to give the reasons for her absence, despite criticism by MPs and unions.

Teaching unions said her absence had been damaging the provision of local education.

Ms Bowen, who had been in the post for nearly five years, has been chair of the directors of education in Wales and a member of the Daugherty Group, which recommended new assessment arrangements for pupils in Wales aged 11 and 14.
