Firms offered pollution advice

A confidential drop-in advice centre for companies to check if they are complying with the latest environmental laws is opening.

An Environment Agency information caravan will visit Wrexham Industrial Estate on 8 and 9 December.

Business chiefs will be able to arrange free pollution prevention visits to their premises.

There have been a number of agency investigations in the Wrexham area during the last few months.

Earlier this month, woodchip giant Kronospan, from Chirk, near Wrexham, was ordered to pay 60,000 after pleading guilty to a number of offences.

Four of them related to an incident in July last year when oil leaked into the River Dee via a tributary.

The company said it regretted the incident and had expert help to advise on preventing further pollution.

Speaking about the information caravan, Environment Agency environment officer Sin Andrew said: "We hope local businesses will visit the mobile information centre to find out more.

"Agency officers will be manning the confidential drop-in advice centre to deal with any queries regarding environmental legislation, pollution prevention measures, waste minimisation and water and energy efficiency."

A serious incident was averted near Wrexham in April after 20,000 litres of liquid, which threatened to pollute the River Dee, was mopped up.

The whey liquid leaked from a tanker and into the surface water drains after the vehicle was involved in an accident.

In a joint operation environment bosses and local farmers blocked the estuary to prevent the liquid from spreading downstream.

The accident happened near Overton-On-Dee, Wrexham.

The Environment Agency said at the time that a "potentially serious pollution incident was prevented."
