Leader rejects 20,000 in salary
Neil Rogers
Neil Rogers was elected leader on Wednesday
Wrexham's new council leader is turning down nearly 20,000 in entitlements for his role.

Neil Rogers has declined to accept the 31,000 salary which comes with the job.

Instead, he will claim a basic 13,000 wage, plus the allowances of 10,000 to take it up to 23,000.

Mr Rogers, a former union chairman, said 13,000 was nearer the wage an average manual worker could expect to get in Wrexham.

He was recently made redundant from the Owens Corning plant in Wrexham.

The new leader had a meeting with the council's chief executive Isobel Garner following which he made the decision.

He said all workers for the council, whether the leader or those who collected litter, had the same objective and he did not deserve more than anyone else.

Mr Rogers, the councillor for Gwenfro was elected as the new leader of Wrexham council at a meeting on Wednesday.

He took over the Labour group leadership from Shan Wilkinson, the former council leader, last week following a loss of four Labour seats in the June 10 polls.
