School site could be developed

An important town centre site could be re-developed following a 22m revamp of education in Wrexham.

The former Groves High School on Penymaes Avenue is currently housing children from Rhosnesni High, one of the county's two new 'super schools.'

However, when the new schools in the town are up and running the building will become surplus to requirements and the land could be sold.

On Tuesday, councillors voted in favour of exploring what possible uses could be made of the site and market research will now be carried out.

Under the scheme the former St David's, the Groves and Bryn Offa School are closing and pupils will be taught at the rebuilt Rhosnesni and Ysgol Clywedog (the old Bryn Offa) sites.

Constraints

Pupils from Rhosnesni, formerly known as St David's, are being taught at the Groves High School, which will shut once the reorganisation is complete.

A local playing field which belongs to the Groves School could also be sold but residents are campaigning to maintain it for recreational use.

A draft consultation by the council says that from next January the site will no longer be required for educational purposes.

Both the school's site and the playing field are subject to certain constraints which councillors will be mindful of before deciding what to do with the land.

The land could be used for educational purposes or business development.
