Jobs cut at car parts factory
A factory producing car parts in Bangor is to close with the loss of more than 60 jobs.

Work at the Wardle Storeys plant on the Llandygai Industrial Estate will be transferred to Lancashire.

Talks had been held between the company, the Welsh Development Agency and the Transport and General Workers Union (T&G) to try to save the jobs.

The union has described the decision as "asset stripping" by owners Alchemy.

In April, the owners gave notice of a 30-day consultation period to try to save the site.

The indications were from the start, the company didn't really want to keep the factory open

But on Thursday, they announced the work would now be moved to the company's plant at Earby, Lancashire.

Tom Jones, the local T&G representative, said the cuts would hit the area hard.

"When we lose manufacturing jobs it is very serious because we have a low base of manufacturing jobs in the first place," he said.

"The indications were from the start, the company didn't really want to keep the factory open."

He added that the offer had been made for people to move to Lancashire, but thought it unlikely anyone would take this up.

Earlier this month, around 40 staff at the factory held a two-day strike at the Bangor factory demanding a 4% pay rise.
