North Wales Police introduced the taser gun a year ago

Police were called to a house in Garden City just after 0300 BST on Thursday after getting reports of a man carrying a knife.

Officers used the controversial taser gun to overcome the man, who is from the Deeside area, and then arrested him.

He was taken to hospital for a check up before he was questioned.

The taser stun gun uses darts and wires to deliver a disabling 50,000-volt electric shock.

Concern

North Wales Police began to trial the gun, which is intended to provide a non-lethal alternative to firearms, a year ago.

The gun's introduction follows growing pressure for a "less lethal" weapon to reduce the number of people shot dead by armed police.

However, human rights group Amnesty International says tasers inflict "intolerable pain" and are easily abused.

The gun was used for the first time by North Wales Police in Wrexham last June.

They used it on a dog after receiving calls from concerned residents living in Tanyfron, near Wrexham.

The weapon was used for the first time on a man in Rhyl in August.

He was hit with the gun three times.

At the time the force said officers had reason to believe the man was armed with a carving knife and he appeared at the door of a property making threats and threw a glass object at police.
