The Venture is a haven for youngsters
A project to help disadvantaged youngsters on one of north Wales' biggest housing estates has received money to build a new games area.

The Venture in Caia Park, Wrexham, was set up in the late 1970s to offer a haven for five to 16-year-olds.

The scheme's primary purpose has always been providing the youngsters with somewhere to play.

Thanks to an 84,243 grant a floodlit multi-use games area will be built and new equipment purchased.

The money has been released from the Sports Council for Wales' Lottery Fund to help provide a cross-section of sports.

It is hoped the new games area will encourage youngsters to indulge in more exercise.

Caia Park hit the headlines in June last year following two nights of violence which police said was partly racially motivated.

A number of Iraqi Kurd refugees had been living on the estate and a fight broke out between them and other residents.

Fifty one people appeared in court for the Caia Park rioting earlier this month, with sentences handed down mounting to more than 80 years.

The Venture encourages young people to help create their own environment, creating a lasting sense of ownership.
