The Myddletons still hope to retain a castle tower for their use

The Myddletons have lived in Chirk Castle since 1595 but, with 80,000 visitors a year, Guy Myddleton says it has become too "too busy" for his young sons aged three and five.

So the family are moving to a smaller home in the area and are selling off some of their private collection.

It's thought the auction in the castle grounds could raise millions.

The Christies sale on 21 June will include around 500 objects from the Myddletons personal possessions including furniture, paintings, books and silver.

Guy Myddleton said his family have been connected with the 13th Century castle for more than 400 years, but it was now time to move on.

"While we are pleased that so many people come to visit and enjoy the castle and its grounds, it has become too busy an environment to bring up our young children," he said.

"We will not be able to take all our belongings to our new home, hence we have instructed Christie's to stage this sale in June."

Although they will no longer be living in the castle, they hope to keep one of its towers for occasional use.

"The Myddleton family has had a connection with Chirk since 1595," said Merlin Waterson from the National Trust.

"It is sad that the private collection may be leaving Chirk Castle.

"We are, however, delighted that the extensive core collection will continue to remain at Chirk."
