John Walker is the first BNP candidate in north Wales |
A forthcoming challenge by the British National Party for a seat on a north Wales council is being fought by a new anti-racist group. The organisation - Deeside Coalition Against Racism and Fascism - was formed following a meeting called by Deeside Trades Council.
They are attempting to prevent BNP candidate John Walker from gaining the Aston seat on Flintshire council in Thursday's vote.
Mr Walker, a civil servant, is a member of the Transport and General Workers Union.
Alyn and Deeside AM Carl Sergeant was one of the speakers at the meeting, held at Connah's Quay Labour Club on Sunday evening.
He said it was well attended with cross-party support from Labour, Plaid Cymru and the Conservatives.
"Deeside Trades Council arranged the meeting so they had many representatives there.
'Catalyst'
"It was an effective meeting which decided to create a Deeside branch against racism," he told BBC News Online.
He said the meeting had been aware "what the BNP could bring to the area" if the party were to be successful in its electoral bid.
"It could be the catalyst for Wales," he added/
However, he did not think the BNP would win the seat.
"The danger is if they see an inroad there, the future potential," he added.
There are four candidates in the election which was called after former independent councillor Pat Yale was disqualified from standing following a court case.
The other candidates are Joyce Angell, Labour, Edward Eyton, Conservatives, and George Hardcastle, independent.
