Flintshire supports 'golden goodbye'

Flintshire councillors have voted in favour of the pay-off
Flintshire County Council has voted in favour of golden goodbyes for councillors by 15 votes to12, with three abstentions.

So far 10 of the 22 local authorities in Wales have voted to reject the proposals including neighbouring authorities in Wrexham and Denbighshire.

Last Tuesday, Conwy and Blaenau Gwent county councils became the latest local authorities to reject the idea of paying up to 20,000 pounds to persuade long-serving councillors to retire.

Speaking before the meeting on Tuesday, Flintshire County Council leader Alex Aldridge said he was in favour of the initiative.

Mr Aldridge, who refuses to take his full salary for being leader of the authority, said it is up to individual councillors to decide if they want to take the allocated money.

Under the controversial scheme, councillors with more than 16 years' service would receive a one-off payment if they choose to stand down.

In councils which adopt the scheme, long-serving members have until 20 November to decide whether or not to accept the payment and retire at the next local government elections in May or June next year.
