Farmers in milk price protest

Farmers' union officials will hold talks with dairy managers after a night of protests over milk prices.

Nearly 200 farmers demonstrated outside two Welsh Dairy Crest plants following the breakdown of talks over an increase in prices.

Dairy farmers targeted Haverfordwest and Marchwiel, near Wrexham, as well as four other sites across Britain.

The National Farmers' Union has called for a 2p a litre rise.

It said consumers were paying more for their milk, but they, as the suppliers, received less.

About 100 protesters gathered outside the Dairy Crest plant in Haverfordwest on Wednesday.

In Marchwiel 50 farmers turned out and managed to persuade a number of drivers not to go into the depot.

"The wagon drivers agreed and were sympathetic with our cause and they stopped moving their vehicles in and out," said NFU member Gwynfor Jones.

"We spoke to six drivers who agreed not to proceed.

"The main supermarkets have agreed for farmers to receive a 2p a litre increase for the price of milk.

"Dairy Crest is not prepared to pass on this increase to the farmer," he added.

The NFU said there had been a dramatic decline in the number of dairy farmers in Wales over the past decade.

Union officials will meet Dairy Crest management to try to reach an agreement.

There was nobody available for comment at the company.

Nick Bourne, leader of the Conservatives in the Welsh assembly, said dairy farmers should have a "fair deal".

"We simply cannot go on with a situation where diary farmers in Wales receive the lowest milk price in the European Union which, in some cases, is less than the cost of production," he said.

"It is time the diary processors recognised this and increased the price they pay to a reasonable level that will sustain a thriving dairy sector."
