Visit prompts 'city' speculation
Queen
The Queen will visit Wrexham in June
There is speculation that a royal visit to Wrexham could signal the town is to become a city, a year after it lost out to Newport.

The Queen will visit the town on 4 June as part of a two-day tour of Wales.

The north Wales town was one of six Welsh contenders - including St Asaph, Aberystwyth, Machynlleth and Newtown - who competed for the title in 2002 to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

Newport won out on that occasion, but Wrexham AM, Dr John Marek said the latest royal visit could mean the town is being reconsidered.

"If we all make representation to the Secretary of State, Peter Hain, saying that he should inform Her Majesty that the Government would not have any problems with announcing Wrexham as a city, we may stand a chance" he said.

However, the Queen cannot decide whether to promote a town to a city.

The recommendation must come from the UK government in Westminster.

The Queen will be accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh.

This is a wonderful honour for the town
Shan Wilkinson, Wrexham Council Leader

There was criticism last year after the Queen left Wrexham out of her jubilee tour, choosing to visit Colwyn Bay instead.

Wrexham Council Leader Shan Wilkinson said the authority would be pleased to welcome the monarch to the town.

"This is a wonderful honour for the town," she said.

"It is an opportunity for us to highlight the excellent progress that has been made to further re-develop the town and its outlying villages.

"Projects such as the re-development of Wrexham bus station and the creation of the Brynteg Lifelong Learning Centre are just a small selection of the work that will be highlighted during the royal visit."

The royal couple's tour will begin in Flintshire before moving to Wrexham where they will visit the North East Wales Institute(NEW) and Hightown barracks.

She will then take her train from Wrexham General Station to Cardiff for the opening of this session of the Welsh Assembly.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh last visited Wrexham five years ago in March 1998.
