Tributes paid to mountain victim
Euryn Williams

Members of a close-knit north Wales community are coming to terms with the death of a popular deputy head teacher.

The body of Euryn Williams from Mold was discovered on Snowdon on Monday.

Friends and family have been comforting the 56-year-old's widow and their four children.

Staff at Ysgol Maes Garmon in Mold - where Mr Williams had taught for many years - have been comforting pupils.

'Harrowing'

Headteacher Huw Alun Roberts, who is also Mr Williams' brother-in-law, said there was an air of sadness at the school.

"We had a short service yesterday and we will be planning a memorial service," he said.

"The place is very quiet and there's a noticeable amount of energy missing.

"Individual children were obviously finding it a very harrowing experience."

Aled Lloyd Davies, former headteacher at Ysgol Maes Garmon, said Mr Williams, a keen mountaineer, was a well-known figure.

"He had a sense of humour which was disguised, you didn't know if he was pulling your leg," he said.

"I've maintained connection with the school and I admire the way he fitted in with the ethos of the school.

"I was with his family yesterday, they're a very close knit family and his eldest child lives fairly closely.

"He was well respected in the area."

Mr Williams' wife is a Welsh teacher at Mold Alun High School.

Mr Williams had set out on a training exercise in Snowdonia at 1000 BST on Sunday and the alarm was raised when he failed to return at 2100 BST.

His body was found on the Crib Goch ridge.

It is understood he was preparing for a 14-peaks walking challenge and is not believed to have been carrying a map or a compass.

Mr Williams was a founder member of Papur Fama, a Welsh-language community newspaper.

Co-editor John Rosser said the death of his friend of 20 years was devastating.

"He was a very popular deputy head and his work with the sixth form was outstanding.

"He will be very, very sadly missed.

"He was involved in the paper from the offset....he's been a co-editor for at least 20 years.

"He was a very strong character and always ready to listen."
