A new swimming pool will be built in Conwy |
A swimming pool and a hockey pitch which could see north Wales hosting international competitions has been given the go ahead by the Sports Council for Wales. The sporting body agreed to partly finance the hockey pitch and an eight lane, 25 metre swimming pool.
The facilities will be built in Wrexham and Conwy.
The news comes days after the sports council released 1.5m to build an indoor athletic centre at Deeside College.
The hockey pitch, made from top quality astro turf, will host national competitions and squad sessions.
These projects add to the growing network of first class competition and training facilities in the north Dr Huw Jones, Sports Council for Wales |
It will be built at the North East Wales Institute (Newi), the higher education college in Wrexham.
Conwy Council will put a bid in to partly fund and build the swimming pool.
The full cost of the project is not yet known.
"These projects add to the growing network of first class competition and training facilities in the north such as the National Canoe Centre in Bala," said Dr Huw Jones, the Sports Council for Wales' chief executive.
"While it is only possible to build these projects in just one area, they will benefit all hockey players and swimmers in the north and will make an impact right across the region," he added.
Most recently the Sports Council contributed 1m to build a new stand to help establish a regional stadium at the Racecourse football ground in Wrexham.
It has also funded an extension to indoor tennis facilities in Wrexham and another indoor tennis centre is under construction in Conwy.
A new 10.7m national swimming pool for Wales opened in Swansea in March, replacing the former Empire Pool in Cardiff.
