Rachael Lloyd ran away to be with Mehmet Ocak |
A Turkish waiter who was jailed for having an improper relationship with a teenager from Wrexham is expected to appeal against his sentence within weeks. Mehmet Ocak was jailed for five years in February after being found guilty of statutory rape.
Rachael Lloyd, who turns 16 in January, has always maintained she would return for the hearing to be with the barman she calls Steve.
We haven't heard from the lawyers in Turkey and we don't know when the appeal is or whether Rachael will go over Carole Lloyd, Rachael's grandmother |
The 15-year-old is living in Wrexham with her grandmother Carole Lloyd, whom she was on a holiday with in the Mediterranean resort of Marmaris in May 2002 when she met her boyfriend.
Mrs Lloyd said the family do not know when Mr Ocak's appeal will be heard.
"We haven't heard from the lawyers in Turkey and we don't know when the appeal is or whether Rachael will go over," she said.
She also admitted that there had been no communication between the pair for a while.
Rachael Lloyd began a relationship with the 24-year-old when she was just 14.
Marriage
Ocak had denied statutory rape and holding by force, claiming he thought the teenager was 15, the age of consent in Turkey.
Giving evidence earlier this year, the teenager told the court their holiday romance had not been consummated despite her previous claims.
The lawyer acting on behalf of Mehmet Ocak said a date for the appeal had not been finalised, but was expected soon.
Rachael returned to live with her grandmother after initially moving in with her father Bob in Rhos when she came back from Turkey.
He has always maintained he would not allow his daughter to marry the Turkish waiter until she reached the age of 18.
