MP Opik's lookalike short of work
Neil May and Lembit Opik
Double take - Neil May and (right) the real Lembit Opik
Lembit Opik may be one of the UK's most high-profile MPs, but spare a thought for his lookalike who has not worked since becoming his double a year ago.

Stage actor Neil May, 40, from Leicester, signed with an agency but demand for a Lembit lookalike has so far been a little disappointing.

He said he was not expecting to make a lot of money because it was not as though he was a David Beckham double.

The "real" Mr Opik joked that he was surprised somebody "shared his looks".

Meanwhile, the MP's girlfriend Gabriela Irimia, of pop duo the Cheeky Girls, said she preferred "the real thing".

Mr May said he was inspired to become a Lembit look-alike when a friend said he resembled the Liberal Democrat MP for Montgomeryshire.

"I've been a Lembit lookalike for a year, but I haven't been booked yet," said Mr May, who works as a stage actor and also performs role-play for the business sector.

"I wasn't expecting to make a lot of money - if you looked at it like that you would be very disappointed. It's not as though it's a Posh or Becks lookalike.

"I suppose if Lembit became leader of the Liberal Democrats then I'd get more work. It might be better too if I teamed up with a Gabriela Irimia lookalike."

Mr Opik, 42, an MP since 1997 and the party's industry spokesman, has made regular headlines for his relationship with singer Ms Irimia.

He joked: "I'm very surprised that somebody shares my looks and my heart goes out to him.

"I've seen Neil's photograph and there's a resemblance, but I understand he hasn't had a single booking.

"I understand he's said he would like me to become party leader so he could get more work, but he will have to be satisfied with me trying to become president of the Liberal Democrats."

Mr Opik's partner Ms Irimia said: "Perhaps he's (Mr May) not getting the work because he's charging too much, but maybe he's not charging enough! I prefer the real thing."
