Dylan Thomas' passport was purchased by the national library

The passport, marked deceased, was sent home to Wales after the hard-drinking poet's death in New York in 1953.

It comes complete with stamps for the United States, Iran, Czechoslovakia, France, the Netherlands, and Canada.

It is part of an exhibition marking the library's centenary earlier this year which has been placed on the internet.

In This Place brought together many of the library's most important collections for the first time.

It also allows people to read letters from a Welshman who served in the American Civil War and recruitment posters from World War I.

The library, based in Aberystwyth, has more than five million publications, with over a million online.

Among the other items published online are letters by journalist Gareth Jones, from Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, who was murdered in Inner Mongolia in 1935.

There are also documents relating to the national strike from 1926, and letters in Welsh by Corporal Griffith Jones of Penisa'r-waun, Gwynedd from the American Civil War.

The librarian of the national library, Andrew Green, said: "The National Library of Wales's centenary celebrations were a great success as was the centenary exhibition.
