Counties in appeal for more money
The Senedd
Councillors from Powys have already met AMs at the Senedd
The councils with the lowest grant rise in Wales are to appeal to an assembly government minister for an increase.

Powys, Anglesey and Conwy councils, which are scheduled to receive between 1% and 1.1%, will press for at least a 1.5% rise next year.

Local Government Minister Brian Gibbons was described as anticipating a "constructive discussion" with them.

Last month, the assembly government said grants across Wales were "tight" but called it a "realistic deal".

The latest meeting comes a week after a cross-party delegation from Powys Council held talks with mid Wales AMs.

The delegation, which will meet Dr Gibbons in Cardiff on Wednesday, is being led by Powys Council and also includes the Welsh Local Government Association.

The extra funding could make a real difference for us
Hywel Eifion Jones, Anglesey Council

A Powys Council spokesman said: "The purpose of the meeting is to lobby the assembly for a 'floor' of 1.5% for the three councils who have all received settlements of 1% or 1.1%."

Councillor Hywel Eifion Jones, who is responsible for finance at Anglesey Council, said increasing the island's settlement to 1.5% would mean nearly 400,000 extra for the authority.

"This might not seem a great deal, but the extra funding could make a real difference for us," he added.

An assembly government spokesman said a consultation process relating to the settlement was taking place.

He said Dr Gibbons was happy to meet the council leaders and "looking forward to a constructive discussion," he added.

"We have provided a realistic settlement for local government in what is a tight three-year budget for the assembly government.

"This year together Conwy, Powys and Ynys Mn (Anglesey) councils will receive over 430m in support for revenue and capital expenditure."

Powys Council's chief executive Mark Kerr, head of finance Geoff Petty and Gwilym Vaughan, the councillor responsible for finance, will be among the officials at the meeting.
