Calls for town centre alcohol ban

There are concerns about people drinking in Temple Gardens
Rowdy behaviour has led to renewed calls for an alcohol-free zone in a town centre in Powys.

The proposals in Llandrindod Wells are expected to go out to public consultation in the next few weeks.

Some town councillors have been calling for the zone since 2003, but renewed their appeal this year after recurring problems in the town centre's gardens.

Last month the Home Office praised a town centre drink-free zone in Aberystwyth which has helped cut crime.

Local councillor Keith Tampin said up to 20 drinkers congregated in Llandrindod's Temple and Memorial Gardens.

"The drunken behaviour has been a problem for some time, and people have even been seen urinating in public in the gardens," he added.

"We recently sent out a flyer asking people to email their thoughts about the zone and 241 were in favour and four were against."

But fellow county councillor David Peter disagreed, and said the plans were "seriously flawed" and would not clear-up the problem.

"Confining the proposed designated public places order to the Temple and Memorial Gardens will simply move the problem into other areas of the town, especially into the other open spaces such as the Rock Park and possibly the Lake Park," he added.
