Big demonstration: The BACH sign looms over Builth Wells

Campaigners have mown the name of their action group into a hillside in a sign stretching 200m (656ft) in letters 100m (328ft) high and 40m (131ft) wide.

The massive BACH (Builth Against Closing Hospitals) near Builth Wells in Powys is intended as a reminder to Royal Welsh-goers in nearby Llanelwedd.

"It was a bit of a challenge," said the mower, farmer Rob Healey.

It is the latest stunt by the group, which opposes plans by Powys Local Health Board (LHB) to cut services at Builth Wells, Knighton, Bronllys and Llanidloes hospitals.

On Valentine's Day it staged a "We love our hospitals" demo, complete with heart-shaped balloons.

It also held a carol service in December attended by more than 400 people.

Mr Healey was guided by mobile phone from the entrance to the Royal Welsh showground by Glenys Price and the Reverend Phil Morris from the Friends of Builth Hospital.

"The ground slopes away so it was difficult getting the letters straight," said Mr Healey.

"But Glenys and Phil were on the phone directing me and making sure I spelt it right.

"All my children were born in Builth hospital so I'm happy to do anything I can to help make sure the town keeps it."

Group chairman Jonathon Morgan said Mr Healey's effort was typical of the strong support the campaign was receiving.

The group is fighting plans by the LHB as it faces a �3.5m deficit. But the LHB has said the hospital buildings are outdated and patients deserve better.

Last month, First Minister Rhodri Morgan called a temporary halt to changes to Welsh hospital services.
