Bilingual school plans go on show

Councillors backed plans for the new school in 2004
Proposals for a new bilingual primary school in a north Powys village are going on display.

Plans of the new building at Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, near Welshpool, will be on show at the current school from 1900 GMT on Monday.

In 2003-04, some villagers opposed a review by Powys Council which looked at uniting a number of schools in the area.

Councillors eventually decided to build a 1.7m replacement in Llanrhaeadr.

The new school is expected to cater for 120 pupils and will include room for early years or playgroup classes.

Primary schools in Powys have been under the spotlight in recent years.

Action plan

Plans to close a dozen in 2003 were shelved after opposition. A council review had found that they were too big for the numbers of pupils they served.

But following protests by the communities under threat, the council backed down.

However, another review last year in Powys thrust schools into the spotlight again.

The local authority devised an action plan to examine the state of the buildings, and those schools which were over-subscribed or had extra places.

Those under threat are expected to be discussed at a council meeting in the near future.

Other counties, including Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire, Denbighshire, Swansea and Cardiff have taken steps to review provision because of falling pupil numbers in recent years.
