They are also in talks about holding a concert at next month's festival in memory of the performer, who died at the age of 80 last week.

Event director Jim Smith said proposals were for a plaque or a statue of Melly, one of Brecon jazz's founding patrons, but plans were still under discussion.

Melly opened the first festival in 1983. He also owned a home near Brecon.

Mr Smith said there would be an announcement about a planned concert before the start of the four-day festival, which starts on 9 August.

Last week Mr Smith described Melly as "a great friend" of the event.

Fly-fishing

"We're looking at a memorial concert and something more permanent, such as a statue or at the very least a plaque," Mr Smith said.

"Obviously, we'd have to look into how we would go about this, and we'd have to speak to the local authority about a suitable position for a statue or a plaque in the town."

Away from show business and writing, Melly's main recreation was fly-fishing and he owned a mile-long stretch of the River Usk beside his holiday home at Scethrog, near Brecon.
