The schools will close in August, says the council |
Two primary schools in Ceredigion are to close this summer because pupil numbers have fallen into single figures. Nine children attend Ferwig near Cardigan and four go to Brynherbert near Llanrhystud.
The pupils will be sent to other schools nearby from September.
Other counties in Wales, including Carmarthenshire, Denbighshire and Powys are also considering school closures because of falling pupil numbers.
Falling numbers were highlighted on Monday in the annual report of the schools inspection body, Estyn.
It said if the number of schools in Wales was reduced to cater exactly for the number of pupils, then councils in Wales could close 275 average-sized primary and 26 secondary schools.
In Ceredigion, following a consultation period with parents, teachers and governors of both Ferwig and Brynherbert schools, the council said both would close at the end of the academic term in August.
A spokeswoman for Ceredigion Council said: "Both schools have experienced falling rolls, with pupil numbers below 10 in both cases.
 | A school closure is always the last option |
"A school closure is always the last option and we are very sad that this action has been required."
She added: "The authority does not have a strategy for school closure - it has always made it clear that its strategy is to support schools.
"In several cases, schools have been collaborating under the same head teacher, and this has happened in the case of both Ysgol Y Ferwig and Ysgol Brynherbert."
