Businesses and individuals are being targeted by the scam, say police |
People in north Powys have been warned about a telephone scam intended to defraud businesses and individuals out of nearly 200 each. A company has claimed it was working with local police on an anti-crime and drugs booklet for schools.
People in Montgomeryshire were being asked to sponsor the project and hand over their bank details and 195.
But Dyfed-Powys Police said that the force was not involved with the company or the scheme.
The warning comes after police received a number of complaints.
Community safety officer for Dyfed-Powys Police in Montgomeryshire, Pc Gareth Slaymaker, said: ""Should you be contacted and manage to obtain genuine details of this company then please forward the details to the police.
"Don't be pressurised into making any form of financial commitment and do not give out your personal bank details over the phone."
According to the Office of Fair Trading, consumers in the UK lose an estimated 1bn per year to various scams which exploit low-cost mass marketing techniques to target recipients.
It said many of the scams originated from overseas making detection and prosecution more difficult.
People with information are asked to contact Dyfed-Powys Police at Newtown on 01686 625704.
