National park announces job cuts
The Brecon Beacons
The Brecon Beacons National Park Authority employs some 135 staff
Brecon Beacons National Park Authority has announced it is to axe 12 jobs in the wake of a "radical staff restructure."

As well as the job cuts, some posts will re-defined and several new positions created.

The Brecon-based authority said the restructuring would allow it to deliver a better service.

It currently employs 135 people and has responsibility for planning issues and managing 218 sites.

Park authority chief executive Chris Gledhill said: "Over the last 18 months the authority has taken stock and undertaken a fundamental review of why we are here.

"Naturally, the decision to lose some of our staff was not taken lightly. However, as a public authority we have a responsibility to focus what resources we have on service delivery."

The park confirmed that 12 posts would be cut - two of which are currently vacant. Six jobs will be redefined and nine new positions will be created.

The public service union Unison is expected to comment about the redundancies on Tuesday.

Councillor John Morris, who sits on the authority, said the performance of national parks and county councils in Wales had been under scrutiny from the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) and the Audit Commission.

"The demands made by WAG and the Audit Commission means the authority has had to make changes," he said.

The Brecon Beacons National Park is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK.

The park covers an area of 1,347 sq km (520 sq miles) stretching from Hay-on-Wye in Powys to Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire.
