Chairman of the Welsh Development Agency Roger Jones, from near Brecon, has been knighted for services to business and training in Wales.

Professor Richard Daughterty, formerly of Aberystwyth University, receives an OBE for services to education.

They are among nine mid Wales people who are recognised for their diligence.

Originally from Corwen in north Wales, Mr Jones, 61, launched Penn, the international pharmaceuticals company based at Tredegar in south east Wales, in the early 1980s after being "fast-tracked" by the Wellcome Foundation.

Married with two children, Mr Jones is also a BBC National Governor in Wales.

OBE recipient Prof Daughterty, 62, who now lives in Mumbles, near Swansea, but still has a house in Aberystwyth, said: "Of course I'm very pleased - it's nice to be given these things and I've done a few things in my time and, if someone recognises that, then it's fine."

The father of two, stepfather of two and grandfather of two retired earlier this year after 11 years at Aberystwyth University.

He was head of the education department for seven of those and four as Dean of the Arts Faculty.

There is an OBE for Robert Farmer, from Aberaeron, Ceredigion, the former chief executive of Forest Enterprise Wales.

Trevor Griffiths, from Cardigan, the chairman of the General Dental Council's law and constitution committee, is also rewarded with an OBE for his services to dentistry.

Among the recipients of the MBE are Powys county councillor Gwilym Tibbott, whose constituency is the village of Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, near Welshpool.

He is recognised for services to the community in Powys.

Cllr Tibbott, 77, has been a community councillor for 37 years and a county member for 15. He said: "I'm very, very pleased and proud.

"It came as a surprise and it's a great honour, but not just for me but my family too.

"My wife, Isobel, has been very supportive over the years and I pay tribute to her."

The father of three grown up children and grandfather of six, is a school governor at Llanfyllin High School and Ysgol Pennant, which are both near his home.

His council colleague Joe Griffiths, who represents Newtown, receives the award for the same reason. He is one of Powys' longest-serving councillors.

Dr Alexander McMurrough Cavenagh, from Brecon, is recognised for services to the community in his home town.

Dr John Cule, from Llandysul, Ceredigion, for services to mental health care in west Wales.
