Views on the civil service strike
Ben Griffiths
Ben Griffiths: "They are striking for other people as much as themselves."
As hundreds of thousands of civil servants strike over plans to cut up to 100,000 jobs, what do the public make of their industrial action?

The strike is organised by the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), which says about 20,000 civil servants are taking part in Wales.

The BBC Wales News website asked people in Aberystwyth for their views.

  • Ben Griffiths, 63, from Aberystwyth, is a student and a retired teacher.

He said: "Most of the people in these civil service offices in Aberystwyth and elsewhere in the UK provide an essential service and I believe that they are striking for other people as much as themselves."

    Heulwen Davies
Heulwen Davies: "I don't really see the point in striking."
"I'm on pension credit, but if there's a problem I've been told the office in Aberystwyth will sort it out, although they don't have to.

"I don't know what's going to happen when the offices in Aberystwyth close."

"I'm not a political person, but I believe society is being dismantled.

"Our culture and the moral structure too along with our traditions, inter-personal relationships and our families.

"So, I expect that more strikes will follow because people are becoming disillusioned."

  • Heulwen Davies, in her late 30s, is a farmer's wife from New Cross, near Aberystwyth.

    Liam Phillips
Liam Phillips: "If they want to make a point then they should strike."
"I don't really see the point in striking.

"I'm from the farming community and we can't strike, we have to just get on with it.

"The civil servants are annoyed with people higher up the chain than us.

"They (the civil servants) are not satisfied with those at a higher level and they are trying to bring this to the public's attention so I expect more strike action will follow."

  • Liam Phillips, 17, from Llanon, near Aberystwyth, is a student.

"If they (the civil servants) want to make a point then they should strike."

"The strikes don't really affect me so I'm not sure about that, but if they (the civil servants) feel it's essential then they will."
