Welsh rock group the Super Furry Animals are the surprise choice to open this summer's Brecon Jazz Festival.

The band will perform at Theatr Brycheiniog on 12 August in a 1,000-seater marquee a day before the festival starts.

The Super Furries are currently recording their seventh studio album in Spain and are fresh from their experience playing the Isle of Wight Festival.

We thought it would be a great way to kick-off a fantastic weekend of music
Andy Eagle, Brecon International Festival of Jazz director

Andy Eagle, director of the theatre and the Brecon International Festival of Jazz, said: "In the past few years we've had a Thursday night gig before the official start of Brecon Jazz on Friday.

"And when the opportunity arose to host the Super Furries, we thought it would be a great way to kick-off a fantastic weekend of music.

"We've got a marquee in a new site and this will be an ideal way to launch it and to bring a new audience to Brecon who we hope may stick around to grab some of the wonderful jazz on offer over the weekend."

Veterans

Amy Winehouse
Amy Winehouse was nominated for a Brit and starred at Glastonbury

This is the 21st year of the Brecon festival and among the headlining acts are Brit-nomiinated Amy Winehouse, Jane Monheit and Claire Martin.

Others include Tommy Smith, Brian Kellock, Larry Coryell, John Abercrombie, Dori Caymmi, Grammy award winner Randy Brecker with Bill Evans and the legendary Kenny Barron.

Two veterans of the British jazz scene, Humphrey Lyttelton and George Melly, will appear once again at the 21st festival.

They both appeared at the first festival in 1984 and both men have been regular attractions since then.

The Super Furries are regarded as the most creative of the modern Welsh bands. They consistently combine classic songwriting with often breathtaking experimentation.

The band is made up of members Gruff Rhys, from Bethesda, Dafydd Ieuan and Cian Ciaran, both from Anglesey and Guto Pryce and Huw Bunford from Cardiff.
