Seventy march against Tetra mast
Protest march
Residents march against the mast in Llandidloes on Monday
More than 70 placard-waving protesters marched through a mid Wales town on Monday night against a Tetra mast that's been erected near homes and businesses.

The campaigners in Llanidloes want to see the mast moved to a site where there are no houses because of possible health fears.

Even though the mast has been erected it hasn't been 'switched on' yet and they say that they will be continuing with their campaign to get it moved.

Opponents of the Tetra mast claim there has not been any public consultation between townspeople and MMO2 Airwave, the company behind the 15-metre tower.

Llanidloes Tetra Mast Action Group will debate next week whether or not to press ahead with plans to take legal action against MMO2 over claims that it has acted unlawfully.

The group has been campaigning for weeks against the development which it claims could be a risk to people's health.

But MM O2 Airwave claim there is no evidence of any risk to humans.

"Between 70 and 80 protesters marched through the town to Maes y Llan where the Tetra mast has already been erected," said a Llanidloes Tetra Mast Action Group spokesman.

"We achieved our goal and some people brought placards along too, but our next move is to hold a meeting on Monday to consider whether or not to take legal action against MMO2. We claim that the company has acted unlawfully by erecting this and not consulting with us.

"Workers from a business near the mast are represented by the Transport and General Workers' Union and its legal department is looking in to it along with some solicitors from Chester."

Tetra is a new hi-tech police secure communications system. It is in the process of being rolled out across England and Wales with 3,200 masts - 300 of them in Wales.

The company behind Tetra say the campaigners' claims are 'nonsense'

Peter Sitch of MMO2 Airwave said: "What the action group is saying is nonsense.

"We've written to Llanidloes Town Council on many occasions and received very few replies."

He added for that the Tetra mast in Llanidloes was producing frequencies below the national guidelines.

"Not only that," said Mr Sitch. "The mast will provide huge benefits to people in the town.

"I understand the A470, which passes by Llanidloes, has more accidents per mile than any other road in the UK.

"That's one of the reasons why the emergency services need good radio coverage so they can rush to accident scenes."

The mast is on land owned by Quality Tools and Engineering on the Maes y Llan industrial estate.

The National Radiological Protection Board also says there is no evidence that the Tetra masts can be harmful.
