Sian Lloyd's engagement ring was designed and made in Machynlleth

Crafted from 18 carat Welsh gold complete with heart-shaped diamond, the special item is a one-off.

Mr Jenkins said the ring was big, but not so big to be ostentatious.

He explained how he received a call from Miss Lloyd, but hadn't realised who she was until she walked into his shop with fianc�e MP Lembit Opik.

"I was preparing to take part in a play when I received a call from Sian and she said she wanted to come to the shop to look at some engagement rings," said designer jeweller Mr Jenkins, a 61-year-old father-of-two.

"But I didn't realise who she was until she walked in with Lembit.

"The ring is 18 carat Welsh gold complete with a heart-shaped diamond ring. It's a big diamond, but not big enough to be flashy. The ring is totally unique."

Mr Jenkins, who has been a jeweller for 36 years, said it meant a lot to the couple that they were buying a Welsh gold ring in Mr Opik's constituency.

Mr Opik praised Mr Jenkins' design.

"It's really nice and means so much to us that it has been made in Machynlleth as that's in my constituency," said the Montgomeryshire MP.

"Kelvin did a good job, has a good reputation and he's really come up trumps with the ring."

Mr Opik said he popped the question, while the couple were travelling in a light aircraft.

"I proposed to Sian while at the controls of a light aircraft 3,000ft above Wales," said the pilot MP.
