Police have praised the behaviour of music fans with attendances up and arrests down at the Brecon Jazz Festival.

Officers made only 10 arrests throughout the three-day event, well down on previous years' figures.

Police welcomed the fall in crime and disorder among festival goers.

Around 70,000 visitors were expected in the mid Wales town over the weekend.

I am particularly pleased that instances of crime and disorder has reduced this year
Inspector Andy Twigger

Inspector Andy Twigger said he was particularly pleased with the drop in crime and disorder.

There were 10 arrests. Four for drunk and disorderly, one for drunk and incapable, three for public order offences, one for indcent exposure and one for assaulting a police officer.

The arrests resulted in three charges, three fixed penalties, three bailed for caution or warning and one no further action, said police in Brecon.

Inspector Andy Twigger said: "I am particularly pleased that instances of crime and disorder has reduced this year, as it benefits the jazz, the town of Brecon and all the agencies involved in the planning and the policing of the event."

On the eve of the event Dyfed-Powys Police had warned that they would be taking a hard-line against anti-social behaviour and binge drinking at this year's festival.

Ninety-five acts entertained the crowds at a variety of venues during the festival's 21st year.

Festival director Andy Eagle said: "It's difficult to say at the moment, but we think that overall tickets sales were up 10% on last year.

"We sold 20,000 tickets and about another 50,000 attended the festival.

"Among the highlights were Amy Winehouse, the Super Furries and Italian pianist Rosanna Sportiella.

"She was one of the stroller events and after her first appearance news got round the festival and her second show was over subscribed.

"The most popular venue was the Watton Field and it had a real family atmosphere."

Mr Eagle and his colleagues start planning for next year's festival in October.
