Plaid Cymru is urging its members to vote against a referendum on plans to appoint an elected mayor in Ceredigion. Even though some party activists helped to collect the 8,000 names needed to trigger the vote Plaid says it wants to concentrate time and resources on winning the local elections.
Senior Plaid figures are angry that protest group Llais Y Cardi - who organised the petition - intends fielding candidates in the council elections on 10 June.
Speaking on the Welsh language current affairs programme Llinyn Mesur on Sunday, Plaid's election officer Richard Owen said the party wanted a no vote in any referendum.
Llais Y Cardi has created its own party, Llais Ceredigion - the Voice of Ceredigion - and is targeting seven wards in the council elections.
It is also intends putting forward its own candidate for mayor if the electorate votes in favour of creating the post.
The seven wards chosen by the new party to stand in are Aberporth, Beulah, Llanarth, Llanfarian, Llanrhystud, Lledrod and Penparc.
Emyr Hywel from Llais Ceredigion said he would prefer it if Plaid joined forces with them, in their campaign to get a mayor and stop the development of thousands of houses in the county.
