Dyfed-Powys Police have begun an investigation into what happened |
A man has been killed in a car crash after another driver being pursued by police collided with his vehicle on a main road in Ceredigion. The crash happened on the main trunk road on the A487 near Llanarth at 2315 BST on Wednesday.
An investigation is under way by Dyfed-Powys Police, which will be supervised by the Police Complaints Authority.
One man was pronounced dead at the scene while the other was taken to Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth with serious injuries.
The man is being treated in intensive care where his condition has been described as "critical but stable".
The dead man was driving a red Ford Fiesta from Llanarth towards Cardigan when he was hit by a dark-coloured Ford Escort being pursued by a police car in the opposite direction.
No police officers were seriously hurt.
The Police Complaints Authority became involved with the investigation after Dyfed-Powys Police referred the incident to them.
PCA member Leo Pilkington, who is supervising the investigation, said: "This is a tragic incident and my condolences go to the family of the deceased.
"I will ensure that a thorough and impartial investigation is carried out on behalf of the coroner.
"I would also like to make an appeal for witnesses and ask anyone who might have seen this incident to come forward and contact Dyfed-Powys Police on 01970 612791."
The A487 will remain closed for the rest of the day.
Police said they were unlikely to reveal the identity of the dead man on Thursday until next-of-kin had been informed.
Elderly brother and sister Hywel and Nel Thomas saw the police pursuit as it passed their house which lies along the A487 about a mile and half away from the accident scene.
"We were seeing off a visitor outside our house when we saw a car passing at high speed," said Miss Thomas, 73.

When asked what speed the car was going at ,she said it must have been doing more than 70mph.
The couple also saw a police car with flashing lights following behind.
The police car was close behind although it was not on the first car's tail, said Mr Thomas, who is 76.
Expressing his sympathy to the family of the dead man, Ceredigion councillor for Llanarth Eurfyl Evans said it was a tragic incident that had shocked villagers.

"The police have a job to do and have the 100% backing of the community."
Local people have been campaigning for a long time about this fast and windy road outside Llanarth where several accidents have taken place, he said.
Community councillor Geraint Hughes said protests had been made for a number of years to the county council and the Welsh assembly about how dangerous that stretch of road was.
"The assembly has said there are not enough accidents on this road to warrant any changes, but how many fatalities do we need for something to be done?" he said.
