Schemes told to bid for aid

Small businesses in Powys are being invited to bid for the next round of European funding to help regenerate the county.

Earlier this month, 15 projects received millions of pounds between them to promote entrepreneurship in the locality.

Now the Powys Regeneration Partnership has announced the timetable for the next lot of cash, which comes from the EU's Objective 2 and 3 regional funding programme.

Enterprises, infrastructure projects and research and development initiatives are all eligible to apply.

Training and human resource projects can also apply for funding.

The essential condition for applicants is that they must aim to increase the economic prosperity of Powys and help residents become more employable.

Horse-riding trails

Applicants have until 6 June to make their case.

Becky Samuel, Powys council's European officer, said: "The Powys Regeneration Partnership is here to help.

"So if you have a project idea, then please contact us."

Powys does not qualify for the main European funding scheme, Objective 1, which aims to help those regions whose per capita GDP is less than or close to 75% of the European Community average.

Objective 2 cash is meant for areas which have a higher than average rate of unemployment while Objective 3 aims to promote entrepreneurship, particularly by young people and women.

Some of the schemes which benefited last time included promoting fishing on the River Usk, a sustainable energy project using wood, and opening horse-riding trails in the Dyfnant Forest near Welshpool.
