Woman killed in beauty spot plunge

A woman died and a man suffered head injuries after they fell down a waterfall in mid Wales.

The emergency services were called to the Pistyll Rhaeadr falls near Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant, at around 1400 BST on Saturday.

They found that 60-year-old Evelyn Treen and her husband Michael, 62,had fallen while walking near the beauty spot.

Mrs Treen, from Gainsborough in Lincolnshire, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her husband was transferred to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with chest and head injuries, but was later released.

The police are not treating the incident as suspicious.

The waterfall at Pistyll Rhaeadr was declared the 1000th Site of Special Scientific Interest in Wales in May.

The 240ft high waterfall is the highest in Wales.

In July a paramedic from the west Midlands suffered spinal injuries after a fall at the site during a training exercise.

Emergency services have warned walkers to avoid difficult terrain in the current weather conditions.
