MP seeks talks over job losses
Panasonic, Pentwyn
Panasonic could cut up to 200 jobs at Pentwyn, Cardiff
A Cardiff MP is seeking to meet managers at a Japanese electronics plant in the capital over planned redundancies.

Cardiff Central MP John Owen Jones wants to meet senior managers at Panasonic over the possible loss of several hundred permanent jobs.

The company will not put a figure on the final total of jobs to go.

Panasonic - which operates one of Europe's biggest television manufacturing plants in Cardiff employing 2,700 workers - is holding talks with the GMB union over a package of redundancies.

It is understood that several hundred permanent jobs could go, although the company will not put a figure on the final total.

Voluntary redundancy

The company said it is restructuring its operations to meet demand for digital technology.

Panasonic also blamed uncertainty over the UK's adoption of the single currency as one of the reasons for the cutback.

All the job losses should be achieved through voluntary redundancy or early retirement, Panasonic has confirmed.

The news comes just two days after Sony announced that it was cutting 400 jobs from its Pencoed and Bridgend plants.

Sony said it was moving more strongly into digital product markets and that its south Wales operations would be responsible for digital production.
