| Monday, 16 October, 2000, 12:33 GMT 13:33 UK Six arrested at Irish meat protest ![]() Farmers' protests have been stepped up in recent months Six farmers have been arrested following an overnight protest at a south Wales meat plant against imported Irish meat. A number of farmers gained entry to cold-rooms at the St Merryn plant at Merthyr Tydfil and claim to have discovered it 'full' of Irish meat. The arrests were made for conspiracy to cause damage to the plant and police inquiries are continuing. The manager of the factory drove from Devon to talk to the protestors and police were called to the scene. As the farmers moved in on Sunday night, protest spokesman David Handley said the farmers would be there "for the duration".
Protestor Richard Haddock said: "We do not want to lose our industry. "We are only just recovering from the BSE crisis. "The farmers were seeing how much Irish produce is being used there and persuade the company to go British. "I understand that other plants round the country will be visited." The Cornish-based company was at the forefront of trying to re-start the Welsh and British meat export market. It said last year that it hoped to see Welsh meat processed for sale abroad via its Cornish plant. |
