Lib Dem leader's coalition tour

The Welsh Assembly Liberal Democrat leader is to begin trying to sell his coalition with Labour to his members.

Mike German is touring constituencies addressing rank and file members beginning on Monday night in Newport.

Several senior party members have already come out against the deal, arguing that it could cost the party votes.

While Labour's National Executive has already accepted the coalition, Mr German must now persuade his members - who are due to vote on whether or not to accept the deal - to back it.

The partnership - unveiled on Thursday - will give the Liberal Democrats two seats in the Assembly cabinet as well as an agreed policy programme.

'A real difference'

Mr German, who will be confirmed as Deputy First Secretary if the deal goes through, said the agreement would deliver proper devolution and stable government for Wales.

"This historic document contains over 100 Liberal Democrat proposals," he said.

"It gives Welsh Liberal Democrats an opportunity to implement ideas which we have cherished and developed for generations.

"And most important of all, it means that we can now make a real difference in Wales," he added.

His tour of constituencies ends in Newtown, Powys on Friday night.
