Law students study Dot Cotton case
Dot Cotton played by June Brown
Dot Cotton: guilty of murder?
Students at a Welsh University will get to decide for themselves if soap star Dot Cotton is guilty of murder, as part of a new approach to the study of British criminal law.

Part of the law foundation course at the University of Glamorgan in Pontypridd, south Wales, will involve studying the current euthanasia issue in EastEnders.

In the popular soap, the character Dot Cotton "helped" terminally ill friend Ethel to end her suffering.

The associate head of the Glamorgan Law School, Richard Owen, said the course was designed to highlight the challenges which lawyers face in tackling tricky moral issues.

He said: "For most of us, Dot Cotton is an unlikely murderer but clearly people have different opinions and the law is rather grey in this area.

"We hope that by using relevant and topical examples, our students will begin to recognise that the study of the law is not always straightforward and that one has to be aware of the ethical and moral dimensions which such cases bring to the fore."
