Council officer's settlement defended
Anglesey Council HQ
Five councillors have called for the meeting
Anglesey councillors have defended their decision to award a former housing director a 43,000 settlement.

The payment was made to John Arthur Jones who was dismissed in 1998 after a damning district auditor's report.

The offer was made to him on the morning of an employment tribunal which was to go ahead last July.

John Arthur Jones: Case collapsed

An emergency meeting had been called for Monday night after five members of the north Wales authority said they were "unhappy" with the situation.

They called for full details of decisions taken before and during the tribunal including a written opinion from the council's barrister on the strength of the case.

They also wanted more information from the personnel committee on the decision to sack Mr Jones two years ago following a critical auditor's report.

The industrial tribunal was due to take place at Abergele, and was scheduled to last three days.

But the case was settled before the tribunal could start with the council agreeing to pay Mr Jones just over 43,000 on the basis there would be no admission of any wrongful dismissal or breach of contract.

Last year, a court case against Mr Jones - in which he faced allegations of misconduct in public office and intimidating witnesses - collapsed.
